The identity of the shooter remains unknown, but new photos have been released showing his face without a mask. These images were taken from a youth hostel on Manhattan's Upper West Side where the suspect is believed to have stayed.
The suspect is described as a light-skinned male. In some of the photos, he is seen smiling, which offers a clear view of his face. He was previously noted for wearing a black face mask during the incident.
He was wearing a tan or light-colored jacket, black and white sneakers, and carrying a "very distinctive" gray backpack at the time of the shooting.
Surveillance video shows the shooter coming out from behind a car and shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in the back. After the shooting, he was able to clear a gun malfunction quickly, indicating familiarity with firearms. He then fled the scene on foot before escaping on an e-bike.
At the scene of the crime, bullet casings were found with words like "deny," "defend," and "depose" written on them, suggesting a possible motive or message related to insurance industry practices.
Before the shooting, the suspect was seen on surveillance video at a Starbucks near the hotel and earlier at 5 a.m. walking outside the Frederick Douglass Houses on the Upper West Side.
The NYPD is actively searching for the suspect, having released new photos to aid in his identification. They are seeking information from the public and have offered a reward of up to $10,000 for tips leading to an arrest and conviction.
The suspect had checked into a multi-person room at a hostel on Amsterdam Avenue with two other males. He was mostly masked during his stay there.
These details paint a picture of the events and the ongoing manhunt for the shooter, but the motive and the full identity of the individual remain undisclosed in the public reports.
