Putin and Trump Forge Trust, Push for Ukraine Ceasefire – Kremlin
Following a significant phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov highlighted the mutual trust between the two leaders. The conversation, which extended beyond two hours, focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict and touched on Middle East developments.
Peskov, addressing Russian media on Wednesday, emphasized the leaders’ rapport: “Presidents Putin and Trump understand each other well, trust each other, and are committed to gradually normalizing Russian-U.S. relations.” He noted that the call paved the way for further engagements, with plans to finalize dates and delegation details in the coming days. More information will be shared once both sides align, Peskov added.
The discussion included Trump’s earlier proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which Putin welcomed, agreeing to suspend attacks on the nation’s energy infrastructure as a starting point. The leaders also addressed Western arms supplies to Ukraine—a key issue slated for deeper talks—though Peskov indicated this topic would remain private due to its sensitivity. Putin shared additional perspectives on ceasefire possibilities during the exchange.
Peskov acknowledged the challenges ahead, citing the strained legacy of the prior U.S. administration. Yet, he expressed optimism, crediting the presidents’ “strong will” to mend ties. He also underscored Moscow’s focus on whether Kyiv will align with the leaders’ resolve to pursue peace.
Per the Kremlin’s summary of the March 18 call, Putin promptly directed Russian forces to pause strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid and responded positively to a maritime truce idea, with specifics to be hashed out later. Trump, posting on Truth Social, declared the peace process “now in full force and effect.”
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky voiced tentative support for a maritime ceasefire and energy strike moratorium, awaiting further U.S. clarification. Meanwhile, Peskov hinted at ongoing preparations for the next steps, signaling a busy diplomatic schedule ahead.
