Ed Martin Assaulter Faces New Charges After Tweet Rant and Threats to Interim DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro
Initial Assault Incident:
On May 8, 2025, Emily Gabriella Sommer, a 32-year-old resident of the District of Columbia, allegedly spat on then-interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin during a video-recorded interview with Newsmax.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. in front of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the 600 block of D Street Northwest, Washington, D.C.
Sommer reportedly shouted, “Who the f-- are you?” before confirming Martin’s identity, saying, “Are you Ed Martin? You are. Ed Martin,” and then spitting on his shoulder.
As she walked away, Sommer yelled, “You are a disgusting man. F--- you, Ed Martin. My name is Emily Gabriella Sommer, and you are served.”
Sommer claimed responsibility for the act in subsequent X posts, stating, “Fuck you, Ed Martin. My name is Emily Gabriella SOMMER, and you are served.”
Legal Action Following the Assault:
On May 22, 2025, Emily Gabriella Sommer was arrested by the Justice Department.
She was charged with one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding a government official under 18 U.S.C. § 111.
The complaint was announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Acting U.S. Marshal Ron Carter of the District Court for the District of Columbia.
Ed Martin’s Tenure and Replacement:
Ed Martin was appointed interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia by President Donald Trump in January 2025.
Martin’s tenure included controversial actions such as firing or demoting prosecutors involved in January 6, 2021, Capitol riot cases, threatening legal action against critics of the Trump administration, and defending rioters, including one with alleged ties to white supremacist rhetoric.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina opposed Martin’s confirmation, citing his support for January 6 defendants.
On May 8, 2025, President Trump withdrew Martin’s nomination for the permanent role due to insufficient Senate support.
On the same day, Trump announced Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News host and Westchester County, New York, prosecutor and judge, as Martin’s interim replacement.
Jeanine Pirro was sworn in as interim U.S. Attorney on May 14, 2025.
Trump praised Pirro, calling her “one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York” and a “powerful crusader for victims of crime.”
Tweet Rant and Threats:
On June 3, 2025, Emily Gabriella Sommer posted a series of inflammatory messages on X targeting Ed Martin and Jeanine Pirro.
In one post, Sommer wrote a veiled threat to Pirro: “And lmaoooooo @JudgeJeanine
is the bish that took your job That’s gotta hurt. And she’s got so much trash talk comin her way too, don’t worry bish, you’ll get it too.”
Another post targeted Martin: “Quite actually urgent request for assistance of any and all types. My property has essentially been seized and I do not have the basic necessities nor money to provide for myself nor my dog. Fuck you, Ed… but since you’ve once again made me hostage in this city, I’ll make sure it eats you alive and spits you back out, like the felony ‘assault’ you’ve alleged, wit your punk-ass-bitch-cuckold-neo-neo-neo-no-brained-Neanderthal (no shade to actual non-Sapiens) cracka ass, jive-turkey redneck from the Midwest.”
These posts were cited by the Justice Department as a violation of Sommer’s release conditions, which typically prohibit contact with victims or witnesses in ongoing cases.
New Legal Actions:
On June 5, 2025, the Justice Department filed a court motion requesting pretrial detention for Emily Gabriella Sommer, arguing her X posts breached the terms of her release.
Prosecutors are considering additional assault charges and potentially a stalking charge due to the pattern of harassment and intimidation in Sommer’s social media activity.
The Gateway Pundit reported the potential new charges, describing Sommer’s posts as an “insane tweet rant.”
A post on X by journalist Kyle Cheney on June 5, 2025, noted, “JUST IN: DOJ is asking a judge to put Ed Martin-spitter Emily Sommer in jail pretrial because she tweeted at him on June 3 in violation of her conditions of release.”
Context of Martin and Pirro:
Ed Martin, a conservative activist and “Stop the Steal” organizer, faced bipartisan criticism for his actions as interim U.S. Attorney.
Martin was reassigned to new roles at the Justice Department on May 8, 2025, including director of the Weaponization Working Group, associate deputy attorney general, and pardon attorney.
Jeanine Pirro’s appointment drew debate due to her long absence from legal practice (since 2005) and her history of promoting unfounded 2020 election fraud claims on Fox News.
As of June 5, 2025, Sommer remains in custody pending a judge’s decision on the DOJ’s pretrial detention request.
