Oklahoma Board of Education Unanimously Approves Requiring Proof of Citizenship To Enroll Students
Published: January 29, 2025
The proposal sailed through with a decisive 6-0 vote after just 20 minutes of discussion, reinforcing Oklahoma’s commitment to putting its citizens first.
Protecting Taxpayer Resources
Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters made it clear: “Our rule around illegal immigration accounting is exactly that—an effort to track how many students of illegal immigrants are in our schools.” Oklahoma taxpayers deserve to know how their hard-earned dollars are being spent, especially when it comes to education.
Under existing state administrative rules, the proposal still requires approval from the legislature and governor before becoming law. If enacted, it will mandate that school districts report to the Oklahoma State Department of Education the number of students whose parents or legal guardians cannot prove citizenship or legal immigration status.
The Radical Left Pushes Back
As expected, the National Immigration Law Center is opposing the proposal, claiming that illegal immigration should have no bearing on access to taxpayer-funded education. They argue:
“All children have a constitutional right to equal access to education regardless of their citizenship or immigration status.”
But what about the rights of American children? What about Oklahoma families who play by the rules, pay taxes, and expect their schools to prioritize their children? Requiring schools to report the strain caused by illegal immigration is common sense, yet left-wing activists want to silence any effort to hold the federal government accountable.
Standing Up to Biden’s Border Crisis
Superintendent Walters isn’t stopping there. He recently announced a $474 million lawsuit against Biden’s DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and ICE Deputy Director Peter Flores to recover taxpayer dollars lost due to the administration’s reckless open-border policies. Walter's office made the goal clear:
“Biden Administration leaders utterly abandoned their constitutional duty to secure our nation’s borders, leaving states like Oklahoma to pick up the pieces. Their negligence has been a sad and harmful trademark of the Biden administration and has sent shockwaves across our communities, overburdening schools with unfunded mandates and diverting resources from Oklahoma children.”
Walters vowed to keep fighting for Oklahoma families:
“While President Biden has neglected his responsibility to protect our borders for four years, hardworking Oklahomans are forced to cover the costs of his dereliction of duty. This lawsuit is about accountability and ensuring that our children receive the quality education they deserve, free from the federal government’s failures—even from a failed, outgoing administration. I will always fight for Oklahoma students and Oklahoma taxpayers.”
Oklahoma is taking a stand, and the message is clear: American citizens come First 🇺🇸 !
